Bungalow Colonies: Stories, History, Memories & Connections
This multi story bungalow was at the far edge of the property on the upper level opposite the tennis courts. Our friends the Koopman's used to stay in the lower unit with the porch.
In early September 2010, my wife and I paid a quick visit to my old summer stomping grounds of the Sunnycroft Bungalow Colony in Highland Mills NY - what we found was an abandoned ghost town that was only barely recognizable.

Was this the "White House," which was where, we were told, Cohan did his composing? If so, that's a sorry sorry sight. When we visited in 2007 that entrance closest to the tennis courts was still wide open. Sorry to see that it's now gated.
Hi Steven, The entire place was quite sad. We had to enter through the bushes to get onto the property, some neighbors told us they'd recently closed up the property due to illegal dumping but that it was still owned by Kiryas Joel. I'm not sure where Cohan did his composing, I had always assumed it had been in the large house with the stone base which had been closer to the main road but on the same top level - which "mysteriously" burnt down sometime around 2003 or 2004. This "main" house had quite a number of apartments in it. The house pictured above was 1 of 2 large white buildings that I remember, the one above was directly opposite the tennis court at the furthest edge of property and the other was next to the "Casino" main barn - but I've always assumed that this other building had been for storing tractors or something as it had a large garage like area on the bottom facing the Casino with a few rental units on top (and maybe one one or two on the bottom).
Evan Koopman was in all of my camp groups during the years I was there. I'll get to my attic one of these days and dig up some old photos that I'm pretty sure I still have.
Doug - it's been awhile - did you ever get up to the attic? I'm finally getting around to digging through old photos, I may have some to add soon. We must have been in the same camp groups too at some point. Evan and I were the same age.
