Nice picture! I believe Evergreen was on the corner of Seven Springs road and Bakertown road right down the street from Sunnycroft. It I believe was one of the first bunch of colonies to close. I used to walk by it five days a week in 74 and 75 it was abandoned. I Could be wrong it was a long time ago but there was an abandoned colony there, that am sure of. I would agree they might have Been exploring. I did the same thing with other colonies, a few years before that. And Manny I Still look now and then Mike D.
Mike, my memory is a little fuzzy as well but I think there were two camps on the other side of the Bakertown. I thought Evergreen was almost directly across from Sunnycroft but there was definitely an abandoned one at the corner of Bakertown and Seven Springs.
It might have bin. Pinegrove then, there was definitely. A colony by that name also. The reason I remember some of the colony's names is! in the late sixties' early seventies, the adults would play softball on Sunday mornings after partying on Saturday nights, Fun to watch. They had their own little colony league. If they won, their game, they would drive past the other colonies honking the car horns. The parents had a lot of fun on weekends up there to. Friday nights were for card playing and the tile game (mahjong)? the moms would play! probably spelt that wrong. Saturday nights was entertainment, drinking and partying in the casino. Good times were had by all. Either way great pictures.
I remember we used to play sports against Evergreen from time to time, as well as Rosemarin, Blueberry Hill and I think one called Lebanon - I know there were others but I can't recall.
Mike - I think you got it! Pinegrove, that really rings a bell as the one on the corner of Bakertown and Seven Springs. Those are great memories you have of the softball games. That must have been a blast for the fathers. I remember that the dads would always get together on Sunday (maybe Saturday) mornings for a pick-up softball game.
Well Gentleman! obviously my colony! Hillside was my favorite, Sunnycroft was second! Manny your correct there was one called Lebanon, there was also Carmel park, Paradise park , Colonial Villa. Actually those three are still there. I took a ride up there this past July first time in over forty years! there smaller but still there. Tel Aviv was another colony and I believe there were at least two more. As far as the colonies that were abandoned it was amazing, to see what mother nature took back. The entrance to sunnycroft you can barely make out the stone pillars, there covered up pretty good and the abandoned bungalows in some of the pictures on this sight are either gone or just buried in the woods along with Evergreen, know that I know its name! thanks Doug, I remembered a colony being there across the road. Hillside was on Owens drive there is about five private houses on that property now.
